It may not exactly be a huge surprise given the recent market share numbers, but Google CEO Eric Schmidt has recently confirmed that Android is, in fact, profitable for the company. Of course, it doesn't make all that money from Android directly, but Schmidt says that Android-based phones are already generating enough advertising revenue to cover the cost of development. What's more, while he doesn't provide any current specific numbers, Schmidt did say that he expects there to someday be one billion Android phones in the world, and that if each one generated just $10 per user per year it would be a $10 billion business -- or, as Newsweek notes, about half of Google's total revenue for this year. That's just a tidbit from the full Newsweek piece, though -- hit up the source link below to read the whole thing, which also includes a bit of perspective from Google's Andy Rubin.

West of the Rockies? Want a T-Mobile G2 before (practically) anyone else? You may be able to grab your HSPA+ handset right now. We had it on good authority that T-Mobile corporate decided to match Radio Shack and release the G2 three days early, but we got a pleasant surprise when we called to verify that fact -- several stores in California, Oregon and Washington state said we could buy one today if we wanted, and even those who didn't said they'd have it tomorrow if we could bear the wait. Of course, it's less than two hours to closing on the west coast and we can't guarantee the handsets are there -- so give them a call yourself -- and be sure to buckle up if you plan to rush out. It also couldn't hurt to read our full preview, of course, and if you grab one please do let us know how your hinges hold up.

What is this madness we see before us? Hexxeh, he who provides your nightly Chromium builds, has dropped a small but perfectly formed bombshell by revealing that he's managed to install Google's nascent OS onto Apple's hotcake of a tablet, the iPad. He's evidenced this feat by tweeting from the liberated slate, though one of his outgoing missives includes the dire warning that he'll "dash your hopes later, there are a few catches." Well, at least that gives us a little time to fantasize about Appoogle synergies before those dream-destroying details are revealed in full.

Your Friend is sharing the "Acer Aspire AS5745 and AS7745 pick up NVIDIA Optimus, Aspire AS5742G nabs some 3D Vision" article with you.

Check out: "Acer Aspire AS5745 and AS7745 pick up NVIDIA Optimus, Aspire AS5742G nabs some 3D Vision" - www.engadget.com http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/27/acer-aspire-as5745-and-as7745-pick-up-nvidia-optimus-graphics-a/?icid=engadget-iphone-url
You know who may have been a bit inspired by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang's GPU muscle? Acer! Okay, that's not exactly what happened, but Acer does have quite a few new laptops that tap the graphics-chip maker's latest. First up are the 15.6-inch AS5742G and 17.3-inch AS7745, which still have the same design and Intel Core 2010 CPU options as the previous models, but now have the brand spankin' new GeForce 400M GPUs along with Optimus technology for automatically switching between the integrated and discrete graphics options. Both will be available for less than $800, though there's no word on exact availability of the mainstream machines. Those a bit too 2D for ya? There's also the Core i5-powered, GeForce GT 420M-packing Aspire AS5745DG, which is one of the first machines to have NVIDIA's updated 3D Vision. The IR receiver is integrated into the 120Hz LCD's bezel and it supports 3DTV Play, which lets you reap the laptop's 3D benefits on a larger 3DTV. For $1,000 (active shutter glasses included!) that's not a bad deal, but don't get too excited about ordering one today -- it'll hit e-tailers in late October. Oh, and there's one more! The 18.4-inch Aspire AS8943G has been updated with a Core i7 quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM and ATI's newest Mobility Radeon 5850 graphics for $1,499.99. That's a lot to digest, but hit the break for the press release if you're up for even more details on all the new rigs. %Gallery-103380%

The name of certification firm TUuml;V Rheinland may not ring a bell, so allow us to jog your memory: these are the guys that outed the GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus prior to their announcement earlier this year. Hence, the interwebs are paying pretty close attention this evening now that we've found US and Canadian certifications for Palm models P102UNA and P102EWW (first unearthed by homebrew hub WebOS Internals), which -- following Palm's typical model numbering convention -- would correspond to North American GSM and CDMA versions of some new device, respectively. To put things in perspective, the P101UNA was unearthed in the certification database on January 23rd and announced for ATamp;T on March 22nd, so we could reasonably still have a couple months' wait on these... or a couple days. No way of knowing yet how Palm plans to play this. There's also a listing for a new "inductive battery charger," which would certainly imply a new Touchstone -- which may or may not still bear the Touchstone name.

On a related note, we've received a slew of new webOS 2.0 screen shots -- and while some of them look familiar, our eyes were drawn to the sexy new "classic" and flip-style digital clocks. Important? Not necessarily, but sometimes it's the little touches that count. Hit up the gallery for the full show (and don't forget our first batch from a few weeks back, while you're at it).

Consider yourself schooled. Thales has been kicking the tires in the in-flight entertainment market for over a decade now, but there's no question that its latest innovation is the one that could take it the next level. Shown recently in Long Beach, the Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU) is one of the most intriguing uses of Android yet. The idea here is to use the 3.8-inch handset / controller in order to both view content and control what's happening on one's headrest television. The control itself is powered by an ARM Cortex processor and sports a capacitive touchpanel (800 x 480 resolution), support for Flash and 3D graphics. There's no telling when this stuff will actually be available on commercial flights (or when legacy airlines will ditch their World War II-era fleet), but it's safe to say that we're eager and ready for the future. Oh, and just in case anyone at Thales felt like resting on their laurels, it seems that Panasonic also has an Android-based IFEC system that it's showcasing, and a video of that just so happens to be waiting after the break.

Thales Introduces an Evolutionary Touch Passenger Media Unit built on Android(R) OS

14 September 2010

WAEA Long Beach, CA, September 14, 2010 - Thales, a leader in In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) and connectivity systems, unveils a new product called the Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU). Designed to be both a stand-alone media access device and a controller for the seat display, the TouchPMU is a menu driven, touch screen unit that carves out a new product category that will transform the passenger experience adding multi-task capability and more functionality.

Built on the Android(R) operating system, the TouchPMU will be able to host endless applications. Its mature, open source, web-based platform make it easy to integrate functionality and leverage existing gaming and application resources. As a stand-alone media access device, the TouchPMU locally stores a wide range of applications independent of the new TopSeries system. This allows passengers to engage in activities such as watch moving map flight information, order food and beverages, play games, take a survey, shop and even chat onboard while at the same time engage with the seatback menu options. As a controller for the seatback display, the unit enables the passenger to browse all system functions through an intuitive touch screen interface.

Physically, the TouchPMU is a hand-held 3.8 inch LCD display unit with resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It incorporates leading edge ARM Cortex Processor technology for PC performance at cell phone power levels, and uses capacitive touch technology, which is used in most mobile phones and many PCs today for smooth to the touch navigation. Multi-touch capabilities include two finger pinch for expanding and reducing picture or menu sizes, finger swipe for turning menu pages and two finger rotation to adjust viewing orientation. The unit provides 3D graphics acceleration as well as an accelerometer for 3D graphic rotation and support for local games and applications. In the future, the product will include an Adobe Flash player for playback of videos typically found on the web.

"The TouchPMU is a breakthrough for Thales and for the industry. It is a very powerful device that will provide airlines tremendous flexibility on what they offer their passengers and how they can engage with them. I am very excited about how this product and the integration of Android(R) will continue to evolve and build more innovative applications," said Alan Pellegrini, Managing Director for the Thales In-Flight Entertainment business.

It's been said so many times, but I just got stung hard by the DRM bug, and since there's a "Senior Associate Editor" next to my name somewhere I get to complain about it. Now, if you're a regular consumer with a modicum of common sense, nothing I'm going to say here will come as a surprise or revelation. You're welcome to come along for the ride, but I'm pointing my quivering pen today at the media execs and their willing technologist accomplices that have the nerve in 2010 to enforce HDCP and other completely inane DRM and copy protection schemes to "protect" their content from theft:

You idiots.

Let me tell you my story. I bought one of your movies on iTunes. It's called "An Education," and I've heard very good things. Sure, $15 is a lot to pay for a movie I'll probably only watch once or twice (no rental option was available), but I was stuck in an airport and desperate for something decent to pass the time with. After reading a profile on Carey Mulligan in Vogue at the Hudson News I was completely smitten and decided to watch her Oscar-nominated role no matter the cost. Since my laptop was out of battery, iTunes was my only option, and I attempted to download the movie directly to my iPad. Unfortunately, you can't start watching a download on the iPad until it's completed, and the slow airport WiFi only had me 2/3rds of the way before I had to board my flight.

Typically I wouldn't complain about not being able to download a movie on my airplane flight home, that's historically been an internet free zone, but despite that blessed Gogo Inflight Internet being available on my particular flight I still managed to encounter frustration in my quest to watch my film of choice: the port through which my iPad was attempting to download "An Education" over was apparently blocked, so I streamed some other movies over Netflix instead. Such a difficult life I lead.

After returning home at last, where my speedy connection quickly had the film downloaded at last, I decided that the iPad screen was just too small to truly enjoy the film. I had paid $15 after all, might as well get my money's worth! In my infinite wisdom I had purchased an iPad to VGA adapter along with my iPad which I had yet to use, so I fished it out of its packaging and plugged my iPad into my TV.

OK, if you were skimming to the good part, here it is:

"Cannot Play Movie," my iPad reads. "The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies."

I can't even begin to state my indignation. Who is this possibly helping? The only content that has this sort of protection is the sort of content that has been paid for directly. I'm not the first to be bitten by HDCP, and I won't be the last, but boy does it suck when it's not something metaphorical you're complaining about and instead something real poking you in the eye. And of course, only suckers like me who actually do their best to pay for their media will ever encounter the problem.

Us idiots.

An alternative route: I choose from one of many versions available for free and speedy download on the internet's many torrent sites. Can you believe that, movie company that I don't care to learn the name of? Despite your best efforts to frustrate your users, someone managed to rip your movie and share it with everybody! Never saw that coming, did you?

Somehow they found a way!

On a personal note, I think illegal media sharing, stealing, is bad for content producers and morally wrong. I don't buy into any of these arguments that people who steal are "taste makers" that get their friends to buy stuff, or the "stuff is too expensive / I'm too poor" whine. If it's not worth that much to you don't buy it, but not being able to afford something is no excuse to steal. But how can content producers ever hope to compete pushing paid wares if stolen content is easier to obtain, view, and dispose of? You don't have to back up your purchase, that movie is always in the "cloud"; you don't have to transcode your AAC+ file to MP3, it comes that way; you don't have to worry about HDCP ruining your life, like it ruined mine.

So I downloaded the torrent and pulled the movie over to my iPad to play with the newly released VLC. Oh, guess what? Apple won't let third party apps use the VGA output.

I guess that makes me the idiot?

Paul Miller eventually managed to view his film of choice by streaming his illicitly obtained torrent of the movie to his Xbox 360 using the excellent Connect360 for the Mac. He will not be asking for his $15 back.

Update / addendum: Okay, a few things have come to light. First off, apparently there are some video players and other third party iPad apps with VGA out. I wasn't able to find any at the time of writing (I looked), but apparently I didn't look hard enough!

Also, there are of course some shades of subtlety to the DRM argument that I might have glossed over in my anger. For instance, subscription music services are very difficult to imagine existing without DRM. I know I'm too lazy to cancel my subscription two out of three months and then download all the new stuff on the third month, but I'm sure it would be abused. At the same time, I had actually taken to canceling my subscriptions with Zune and Rhapsody due to my inability to get the music onto my device of choice at my bitrate of choice. Luckily, MOG has fixed this for me, and I'm hypocritically "benefitting" from DRM as we speak.

I guess you could say that DRM, when implemented perfectly (I'd say the closest we've gotten is the excellent Kindle system), is no burden to the paying consumer, but it's rarely implemented perfectly. However, DRM is rarely, if ever, a burden to the pirate.

For those of you who are using this post as a jumping off point for talking about the legality or excusability of copyright infringement, that's totally within your right (and usually pretty entertaining), but my main point here is the reality of living with DRM. For an idiot, like me, it's not easy.

Remember that HP Slate prototype video we happened upon just yesterday? The owner, who goes by the name x313xkillax on YouTube, is back with over eight more minutes of footage, including the packaging. According to the back of the box of this self-proclaimed business model, here's the official specs we're looking at: a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 with GMA500 and Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video accelerator, 8.9-inch WSVGA screen, 2GB DDR2 RAM, about 60GB storage capacity, Windows 7 Home Premium, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, SD card reader, and a 2-Cell 30WHr Lithium-ion Polymer battery. There are two cameras here, one in front and one in rear.

As shown via MS Paint, the screen can detect at least four fingers at a time. The browser is a bit laggy but does do pinch-to-zoom -- again, he calls it a prototype, so it may be better in the final production model. Also in the packaging? A handy dock for keeping your Slate comfy and upright -- it's even got kickstand, two USBs, and HDMI out. But hey, we're wasting your time, and you're the kind of person who wants to see this enterprise-bound tablet in action. Don't let us get in your way, it's just after the break.

[Thanks, Kim L]

Eager to get your hands on that Stefana Giovannoni-designed AlessiTab home tablet first announced back in April? Then it looks like you'll have to wait a bit longer, and shell out a bit more cash than first expected. According to Design Boom, the device is now set to roll out in Italy sometime in November (instead of this month), and it will run euro;399, or about $535 (a full hundred euros than previously expected). Otherwise, the Android 2.1-based tablet looks to be the same as we've seen before, including a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, a DVB-T digital TV tuner, built-in WiFi, and a webcam for video calls. Notably absent, however, is access to the Android Market, but Alessi promises it'll provide a selection of its own apps specifically designed for the home environment.
